Gum Rosin, derived from oleo pine resin, remains as the in-volatile residue after turpentine distillation, presenting as a brittle, transparent, glassy solid. It's insoluble in water but soluble in various organic solvents, graded by color where paler shades indicate superior quality. Other chemical characteristics, largely determined by the pine species, further influence its quality.
Graded primarily by color, Gum Rosin quality is denoted by grades such as X (superior), WW (water-white), and WG (window-glass), with lighter shades being more desirable. With a softening point typically between 70-80OC, higher values denote better quality. High acid and saponification numbers are indicative of superior quality, crucial for downstream derivative manufacturing.
